Shane Swanson

Shane is a respected equities and financial technology expert in market structure and technology. With over 20 years of experience in financial markets and a deep understanding of trading and processing systems, Shane has been deeply engaged with some of the most innovative technology in the financial industry.

Shane is Senior Partner, a member of the Investment Team, and one of the four founding members of 18 Somerset Capital Management, LLC. Shane’s extensive and expert knowledge in regulatory systems, market structure, and navigating broker-dealer regulation with the SEC and FINRA gives 18 Somerset a distinctive advantage in financial industry technology.

Before joining 18 Somerset, Shane led the equities practice as Research Director within the Market Structure and Technology group at Coalition Greenwich focusing on the intersection of regulation and technology. Prior to his role at Coalition Greenwich, Shane was the Chief Compliance Officer for Consolidated Audit Trail (the “CAT”). The CAT is the largest single database of financial information yet to be created. In this role, he worked closely with the regulatory community and built out the necessary compliance and regulatory underpinnings.

In 2007, as a part of Citigroup’s Purchase of Automated Trading Desk (ATD), Shane held the role of General Counsel and Director of Compliance. Shane led ATD’s business, legal and regulatory integration into the Citigroup infrastructure.

While at Citi, Shane ran Lava Trading, encompassing its Alternative Trading System, Smart Order Routing business, Order Management System, Execution Management System, and related businesses. Shane eventually also served as CEO of ATD through the sale of its market making operations.

At various times throughout his career, Shane served on the FINRA Market Regulation Committee, the National Stock Exchange’s Board of Directors as a representative of Citigroup, STA’s Trading and Markets Committee, and SIFMA’s Trading and Markets Committee as Vice Chairman.

Shane graduated law school from the University of South Carolina, cum laude, and from the University of South Carolina, magna cum laude.
